What is Picture The Words?

Picture The Words (PTW) was inspired by a simple idea: how do we enable anyone from any part of the world to learn thousands of words by associating them with pictures?

This led to creating an intuitive learning method which combines illustrations, text, and audio.

The goal of PTW is to make vocabulary easier to understand, recognise, and recall by presenting concepts alongside matching illustrations.

How you can use it

The flashcard decks created on PTW can be used as an offline visual dictionary, as a browser extension while reading, and can be integrated with popular flashcard apps such as Anki.

Where we are now

The current Japanese–English content represents our Minimum Viable Product (MVP). This early release allows us to gather valuable feedback while continually improving the platform. As the project evolves, we will be expanding our concept library, language coverage, illustrations, audio, and learning features.

The MVP covers Japanese and English. Hindi is already built — the concepts, illustrations, audio and translations all exist — and is being held back only until its review is complete. More pairs follow after that. The long-term design deliberately does not treat English as the default source language: every language will be studiable from any other, rather than everything routing through English.
