Privacy Policy
This policy outlines how Picture the Words collects, uses, and protects your information across our website and browser extension.

Your account and review/notes data
If you sign up for an account, your email and the flashcards/notes you save are stored via Supabase (our backend/database provider) so they sync between this website and the browser extension. You can delete your account data at any time by contacting us.
What stays on your device (never sent anywhere)
Study-direction and label-language preferences are stored only in your browser's local storage and are never transmitted to us.
Information you actively provide
- Contact form — if you submit the feedback form on our Contact page, we receive whatever you enter (name, email, country, and your message) in order to respond to you.
- Purchases — if you buy a language pair, checkout and billing are handled entirely by our payment provider. We never see, receive or store your card details.
The browser extension
The extension reads the text under your cursor on the page you are viewing, so it can look that word up. That text is matched against a dictionary bundled inside the extension itself, on your own device. No page content, browsing history, URL or reading activity is ever transmitted to us or to anyone else.
The only thing that leaves your device is a flashcard you explicitly choose to save, and only if you are signed in — in which case the concept identifier is stored against your account so the same deck appears on this website. Your favourites and settings live in your browser's own storage and are never sent anywhere.
The extension asks for permission on all websites because Japanese, English, Hindi and French text can appear on any page. It runs no code on a page beyond drawing the lookup popup, and collects nothing in the background.
Third-party services we use
- Supabase — hosts our database and authentication, storing your account, review progress, and notes.
- Paddle — acts as merchant of record for purchases outside India, handling checkout, billing and sales tax under its own privacy policy.
- Razorpay — processes payments from customers in India under its own privacy policy.
- Netlify — hosts this website and receives contact-form submissions before passing them on to us.
- Chrome Web Store — if you install the extension from the store, Google records the installation under its own privacy policy. Installing manually involves Google not at all.
- Google Fonts — this site loads typefaces from Google's servers, which involves your browser contacting Google directly (standard for most modern websites).
- Dictionary data — vocabulary and translations draw in part from JMdict/EDICT, and example sentences come from the Tatoeba Project and the Tanaka Corpus; see Sources & Licenses for attribution details. All of it is static reference data bundled with the product, not something that tracks you.
We do not sell your information, and we do not use it for advertising. This project doesn't run ads.
Your choices
You can delete your account and all associated data at any time by getting in touch.

We may update this page as the product changes. Meaningful changes will be reflected in the "Last updated" date above.
